Everton fended off a determined Stoke fightback to earn a win courtesy of Tim Cahill's header.

Yakubu had clinically sidefooted the visitors ahead before Victor Anichebe's glanced header added a second.

But two Rory Delap long throws were not dealt with by Everton and Stoke drew level through a Seyi Olofinjana volley and Phil Jagielka's headed own goal.

Everton boss David Moyes was sent to the stands after his side were denied a penalty before Cahill headed in.

Aston Villa condemned Tottenham to their worst start to a Premier League campaign with a victory that leaves Spurs winless and bottom of the table.

Villa took the lead after just four minutes as Tottenham failed to cut out a Gabriel Agbonlahor cross which Nigel Reo-Coker converted with ease.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes inexplicably let Ashley Young's weak 54th-minute shot slip under his body.

Darren Bent's late goal was little consolation for angry Spurs fans.
