Arsenal have made a £20m offer for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney which will spark a rival bid from Chelsea.
Manchester United manager David Moyes, who officially starts his job on Monday, has already had a secret meeting with Rooney and wants the England international to stay at Old Trafford.
Chelsea have made a £45m bid for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani, although the offer does not meet the players £52m buy-out clause with the Serie A side.
Manchester City's interest has switched from signing Uruguay international Cavani to bringing in Brazil attacker Fred, who plays for Fluminense, and Benfica forward Oscar Cardozo.
New City boss Manuel Pellegrini will attempt to sign Sevilla's striker Alvaro Negredo, who has an £18m buy-out clause in his contract with the Spanish club.
A new-look Arsenal frontline could feature Chelsea striker Fernando Torres partnering Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain if Gunners manager Arsene Wenger gets his way.

Manchester United's management are considering a valuation for striker Wayne Rooney. The player is expected to tell new manager David Moyes he still plans to leave the Premier League champions when they meet next week.
United have formally scheduled talks with Rooney for an unspecified date next week through his agent Paul Stretford.
Italian club AC Milan are ready to make a move for Manchester United centre-back Nemanja Vidic if he is not a part of new manager David Moyes' plans.

Arsenal will sign Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Julio Cesar but are unwilling to meet the wage demands and transfer valuations for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini and Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams.

Tottenham's technical director Franco Baldini will hold talks with David Villa before the end of the week as the London club intensify their bid for the Barcelona forward.
Arsenal have put together a package to lure Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to the Emirates. The club's hierarchy believe a signing such as Rooney will help persuade manager Arsene Wenger to sign a contract extension.
Liverpool will seek urgent talks with striker Luis Suarez to assess whether he is in breach of contract following claims from Spain he has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid.
The Anfield club must pay £25m within 10 days if they want to sign attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Real Madrid have offered cash and players - including Argentina winger Angel di Maria - to Tottenham in an attempt to deliver Gareth Bale for newly appointed boss manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Manchester City could offer striker Edin Dzeko to Borussia Dortmund as part of the deal to bring striker Robert Lewandowski to the Etihad.
